OpenLMIS in Eswatini: SolDevelo supporting health innovation

SolDevelo supports the implementation of OpenLMIS in yet another country – Eswatini! Partnering with DP World, we engaged in the project to enhance the usability of the solution and to scale it across Eswatini. The main goal is, as always, increasing the accessibility of OpenLMIS and providing a comprehensive answer to the needs of local healthcare providers and administrators.

This project is realized in collaboration with DP World, Vitalliance, and the Ministry of Health in Eswatini.

OpenLMIS

OpenLMIS logo

OpenLMIS is an open-source, web-based logistics management information system designed to support health supply chains, particularly in low-resource settings. It helps governments and organizations manage and track essential medicines, vaccines, and medical supplies, ensuring their availability at health facilities.

Initial audit and configuration review

At the outset of the project, we conducted a comprehensive audit of the OpenLMIS instance in Eswatini to assess its configuration and alignment with best practices. This audit was essential to evaluate the current state of the implementation, understand the business challenges faced by the in-country team, and determine how OpenLMIS could best support and address these issues.

Transition to maintenance and support

Following the audit, we entered the maintenance phase, focusing on a range of technology assurance and consulting services tailored to the specific needs of Eswatini. The scope of work for this phase includes:

  • Training for the Ministry of Health team: This includes Super User and Administrator training, Developer training, and user training as needed.
  • Integration support: We provide assistance with any necessary integration with the Customer Management Information System (CMIS) and Navision (NAV) to ensure seamless data flow.
  • Ongoing application maintenance: Continuous support and maintenance of OpenLMIS within the country.
  • Application enhancements: Developing improvements to the application in response to specific needs identified by the Ministry of Health.
  • Transition support to the latest OpenLMIS version: Helping Eswatini prepare for an OpenLMIS upgrade.

Training and empowering the local team

We are now beginning the first round of training sessions for administrators through a “training of trainers” approach, which includes a general system overview. It means that we are preparing experienced individuals with knowledge and resources to effectively train others. The goal is to have skilled trainers who can then cascade training to others.

Our next focus will be training end users and local developers, equipping them with the knowledge to manage day-to-day operations and troubleshoot minor technical issues independently.

SolDevelo is looking forward to a successful collaboration with DP World and the Ministry of Health in Eswatini, bringing impactful, sustainable improvements to their health information systems.
