In the NGO, Open Source, and Tech for Good sectors, the launch of a system is just the beginning. After initial grants, organizations face their biggest hurdle:
How do you maintain a complex tool once the primary development funding ends?Â
Our Technical Stewardship service provides a dedicated engineering operational model focused on maintaining system stability, flawless functioning, and proactive security – protecting your digital infrastructure while optimizing long-term operational costs.

The Challenge
The "Day 2" Reality of Software Funding
Building a Global Good requires heavy investment, but maintaining it sustainably often proves much harder. Without a clear strategy for the operational phase, organizations struggle with:
The Maintenance Budget Trap
Transitioning from large, one-time development grants to securing sustainable, predictable budgets for ongoing maintenance and hosting.
The Technological Knowledge Gap
Original development agencies often move on to new projects once the primary build budget is exhausted, leaving behind a technological “black box” with no dedicated support.
Software Degradation
Without rigorous technical stewardship and continuous engineering oversight, critical systems suffer from system instability, accumulating technical debt and security vulnerabilities until they fail their beneficiaries.
Unpredictable Crisis Spending
Without a proactive steward, organizations are forced into chaotic emergency spending whenever a critical bug or server crash occurs.

Our Solution
Sustainable Technical Stewardship
We replace the chaotic “break-fix” cycle with a highly optimized, predictable operational model. We step in as your long-term technical steward, bridging the gap between high-cost development and sustainable maintenance.
Cost-Optimized Platform Operations
We take full responsibility for your hosting, cloud infrastructure, and CI/CD pipelines. Our first step is often auditing your current setup to eliminate unnecessary cloud expenses and optimize resource allocation, giving you the best ROI for your operational budget.
Rapid System Takeover
Don’t let a lack of documentation stall your mission. Our team specializes in “Vendor Gap” recovery. We independently dive into your codebase, audit the architecture, and rebuild missing documentation – minimizing the need for a costly transition period with your previous vendor.
Predictable & Continuous Evolution
We provide proactive bug fixing, security patching, and SLA-backed support. Furthermore, we manage targeted, cost-controlled feature development aligned with your Go-To-Market strategy, ensuring the platform evolves without requiring massive new development grants.
The Result
Key Benefits for Your Organization
Focus on Core Mission
We handle the infrastructure, codebase, and technical debt, freeing your team to focus 100% on delivering social impact.
Predictable Financials (OPEX)
Fixed, transparent monthly retainers eliminate surprise IT costs, making it easier to plan budgets and report to donors.
Extended Product Lifespan
Proactive engineering oversight prevents system rot and performance drops, ensuring your platform remains rock-solid and functional, maximizing the return on your initial development investment.
Future-Proofing & Scalability
We keep the architecture sound and compliant, ready for global scaling or a smooth handover to internal teams when your organizational structure evolves.

FAQs
What exactly is Technical Stewardship, and how is it different from regular IT support?
Technical Stewardship is a long-term operational model where SolDevelo acts as your dedicated engineering anchor. We assume full technical responsibility to guarantee system stability and uninterrupted functioning. Instead of just reacting to bugs, we proactively manage infrastructure integrity, security compliance, and platform health, ensuring your system remains highly stable and operationally cost-effective.
We already have an internal IT department. Do we still need this service?
Yes, and this is a common situation. Most NGO IT departments are built to support internal operations (devices, networks, internal tools) – not to maintain complex, custom-built software platforms. Technical Stewardship fills that gap, taking responsibility for the codebase, hosting infrastructure, and ongoing development so your internal team isn’t stretched beyond their scope.
Our original development vendor is no longer available. Can you take over a system they built?
Absolutely – this is one of the core scenarios we specialize in. We don’t require a handover from the previous vendor. We independently audit the codebase and architecture, identify gaps in documentation, and rebuild what’s missing. Our goal is to reach full ownership of the system without putting that burden on you or relying on a party that may no longer be reachable.
How long does the onboarding / takeover process take?
It begins with a technical audit, which results in an onboarding report detailing the system’s current state – technical issues, process gaps, and documentation weaknesses. The scope and timeline depend on the complexity of your platform, but we are designed to move quickly. We’ll give you a clear timeline estimate after an initial discovery call.
What does the pricing model look like? Is it compatible with NGO budget structures?
We work on fixed monthly retainers, which means predictable, plannable OPEX costs – no surprise invoices when something breaks. This model is specifically designed to align with how NGOs report to donors and manage operational budgets. Exact pricing depends on the scope of the system and services needed; we recommend starting with a free consultation to scope it together.
What happens to our data? Who controls it, and where is it stored?
Data sovereignty is your right, not ours. We operate as your technical steward, not the owner of your data. Hosting arrangements are defined by your requirements – we can work within your existing infrastructure or help you select compliant hosting, including options that meet regional data residency requirements relevant to your programs.
What if we want to bring the system in-house or switch vendors down the road?
We plan for this from day one. Part of our stewardship work includes maintaining clean documentation and architecture that makes future handovers smooth. There are no lock-in traps – our goal is to leave your system in better shape than we found it, whether you stay with us long-term or eventually transition to an internal team or another partner.
Can you work alongside our existing development partners?
Yes. We can operate as the primary technical steward while coordinating with other vendors, implementation partners, or community contributors – especially relevant for open-source platforms. We define clear ownership boundaries so there’s no confusion about who is responsible for what.
Do you support open-source platforms specifically?
Yes, and it’s a core part of our experience. We’ve been part of the OpenLMIS core team since 2016 and are deeply familiar with the governance, licensing, and community dynamics of open-source global goods. We respect open-source licensing obligations and contribute back to communities where appropriate.
What does "SLA-backed support" actually mean in practice?
It means we commit to defined response and resolution times for issues of varying severity – so you know exactly how quickly a critical bug will be addressed versus a minor UI issue. SLA terms are agreed upon during engagement setup and become part of your contract, giving you accountability rather than best-effort promises.
